In der US Besatzungszone geschah die Grenzüberwachung unfangs durch U.S. Constabulary Einheiten, wurde bald durch U.S. - Cavalry Verbände übernommen. In Hessen begann die Hessische Grenzpolizei ab 1.1.1946 anfangs unter Aufsicht der US-Verbände zusätzlich mit der Überwachung der Grenze. Sie wurde 1950 in den bundeseinheitlichen Zollgrenzdienst überführt. Im Mai 1951 wurde der Bundesgrenzschutz als Polizei des Bundes gegründet und nahm als drittes westliches Grenzorgan den Grenzdienst auf.
